Joint letter on AI to Executive Vice-President Virkkunen and Commissioner Micallef

FIA and 12 other organisations representing artists and other creative industries workers have sent a joint letter to Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Commissioner Glenn Micallef, recently appointed to the European Commission, who will be in charge of strategic EU policies related to generative artificial intelligence as well as copyright and related rights in the cultural and creative sectors.

This letter sets out our shared concerns regarding the roll-out of artificial intelligence in our sector, and in particular generative artificial intelligence. It outlines our priorities to ensure a human-centred development of these powerful technologies in future initiatives. We believe that these should aim to improve the EU legal framework to better protect the rights of the creators we represent, the integrity of their work and performances, and their personal data.Given that AI-generated content derives significant value from the large-scale use of human creations, it is imperative to establish accessible, effective and enforceable mechanisms to ensure that this content is exploited with their informed and remunerated consent, and to promote the ethical and fair use of AI.
