Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces in February 2022, our federation has stood in unwavering solidarity with its Ukrainian affiliates and the wider performer community. Over three years on, as the war continues to take a profound human and cultural toll, FIA is determined to pursue and strengthen its efforts.
From the outset, Ukrainian artists and performers have been deeply affected by the conflict. Many have played a vital role in sustaining public morale, using their work to inspire resilience and safeguard cultural identity in the face of ongoing attempts to undermine it. Others continue to live and work under extremely difficult conditions in occupied or frontline areas, where they are exposed to intimidation, displacement, and pressure to comply with imposed narratives – often at great personal risk. Despite these challenges, their commitment to artistic expression remains steadfast.
To respond to these urgent needs, FIA established a Ukraine Solidarity Fund, enabling practical support to reach those most affected. With the support of its affiliates, FIA has been able to provide substantial assistance to its Ukrainian affiliate, the Cultural Workers’ Union. This support has helped artists and their families facing hardship to cover essential expenses, including basic living costs, utilities, and access to food.
This assistance is carefully overseen by a dedicated committee in Ukraine, ensuring responsible allocation to those most in need, with regular reporting to FIA’s Executive Committee to guarantee transparency and accountability.
While this support has made a meaningful difference, the needs remain urgent and ongoing. FIA is therefore committed to continuing this vital work. The Ukraine Solidarity Fund remains a tangible way for our global community to support and stand alongside fellow performers in Ukraine.
At a time when cultural expression is under pressure, FIA underscores the importance of supporting those who continue to create and preserve artistic identity under extraordinary circumstances. The Federation calls on its members and partners to remain engaged and united in this effort.
FIA will continue to advocate, mobilise resources, and work closely with its affiliates in Ukraine to provide assistance where it is most needed – today and in the future.
