Job description

FIA is seeking to employ a junior policy assistant for one year. The focus of this role is to support the work of its Secretariat in Brussels, helping with the implementation of ongoing projects and contributing to various priority policy areas.

The successful candidate should be MA level or equivalent in a relevant field. She/he must be rigorous, well-organised and fast learning. A strong interest in the world of labour and the fundamental rights of workers is desirable, as well as a commitment to inclusion and diversity and some awareness of the professional challenges facing performers globally.

The junior policy assistant will be working under the supervision of, and reporting to, the federation’s General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary. This job is a unique opportunity to build experience in a small but dynamic sectoral trade union federation in the media and entertainment industry.

Role and responsibilities

In general, the policy assistant role will be focused on assisting the FIA team with the implementation of several EU projects, as well with the organization of international policy and statutory meetings and FIA’s communication on digital media.

In addition, the successful candidate will undertake certain key tasks:

Supporting the establishment of a Global Working group to advise FIA on policies, developments and areas of concern to young trade union members, mainly below the age of 30, as well as administering regular meetings of this group, mostly in a digital environment;

Helping update and expand FIA’s Health and Safety guidelines for performers working in live theatre as well as in film and audiovisual production, taking stock of new industry standards and best practices to deliver a comprehensive and modern new manual;

Finalising and delivering a comprehensive report on terms and conditions of circus and variety artists, based on an existing advanced draft that brings together the findings of a survey of all FIA members with an established jurisdiction in this area and a collation of reference literature on this topic;

Monitoring the implementation of the EuroFIA Dance passport scheme, intended to enhance union assistance to dancers working across borders and contributing to further promoting this program among FIA affiliates.

Skills and profile

An advanced degree in EU law, political science or similar area; A demonstrated interest in trade unions and the field of fundamental labour rights;

Basic knowledge of the media and entertainment industry;

Strong research and analytical skills, ability to cover a broad range of issues and work in a multilingual environment, often with little supervision; Ability to collaborate with a network of affiliates and other stakeholders, including in a virtual environment;

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in English and French, with additional European languages a plus; A motivated self-starter who works well independently and as part of a small team.

Terms and conditions

FIA offers a fixed-term, full-time employment package suitable for a junior position, including meaningful benefits. The job could lead to a more permanent position in the organization at the end of the term. It may also entail, occasional travels as and when the conditions are safe to do so.
