A shocking decision by the public authorities in Italy decided to lay off all orchestra musicians and members of the choir of the Rome Opera and outsource their artistic work. This stunning initiative turns its back to social dialogue and forgoes the professional future of almost 200 permanently employed artists. Precariousness breaks with a loud bang in the backstage of the subsidized cultural sector in Italy. As it often happens, the artists are among those mainly – if not entirely – affected by this decision as they now join the unemployment ranks. The International Arts and Entertainment Alliance expresses its outrage against this act of cultural vandalism. A petition has been launched and we invite all our members to circulate it as widely as possible.
