Established in 2021 by the 22nd Congress of the International Federation of Actors, FIA Future Now is the young members’ committee of the federation. It is made up of about 30 young activists from 18 unions belonging to FIA. The group meets on a regular basis to discuss the issues faced by young workers in the arts and entertainment industry.
After a year of working together and discovering each other’s realities, the members of FIA Future Now decided to work on a mission statement which would clearly set out the group’s priorities for the years to come. This document was adopted in July 2023 by the group members.
The FIA Future Now Mission Statement lists the group’s four main missions and the means to achieve them.
Its first mission is to organise young workers in the arts and entertainment industry. Young performers are particularly vulnerable workers who need unions to represent them and defend their rights. Unions also need young members to survive and thrive. To achieve this objective, FFN will seek to identify and spread national good practice relating to trade union recruitment of young performers and other creative workers.
The second mission identified by the group is to get young members involved within their unions and the federation itself. Once they have joined, young members very rarely get involved in the union work. It is essential that they are given the opportunities and tools to continue their trade union journey and become the next generation of union leader. To fulfil this mission, the group will focus among other things on supporting the creation of forums for young workers in the national unions, promoting the training of young union activists and creating its own mentoring programme.
The third mission of the group is to make young workers’ issues a priority at national and international levels, by advising the FIA Executive Committee on the issues faced by young members across the federation.
Lastly, FIA Future Now aims to create and maintain an international network of young trade union activists so that they can learn from each other.
To celebrate International Youth Day 2023, the members of FIA Future Now made a video to introduce the group and its missions. You can watch it on our YouTube channel.
